Can I extend my study permit?
Yes, you can. You need to file the form IMM 1249. This immigration visa form is used by people who want to file an extension to allow them to study in Canada. Individuals submit an IMM 1249 form to change conditions or extend their position in Canada as a student. This application is for temporary residents who are currently living in Canada as students.
Note: Persons entitled to a valid current temporary resident position can apply for a stay of their stay if they apply at least 30 days before the expiration of their stay.
How long can I stay in Canada?
- i) If you are taking a prerequisite course If your school asks you to take courses before accepting you into the main program, your study permit will be valid for 1 more year for the length of that course. When you are recognized in the main program, you must apply for an extension of your stay as a student.
- ii) If you finish your studies after your study permit expires If you do not complete your course before the date of your permission, you must apply for an extension of your stay as a student. If you do not, you will have to stop studying and leave Canada.
iii) If you finish your studies before the study permit expires,if you finish your studies early, your permission will cease to be valid 90 days after you finish your studies, no matter which day the study permit is printed.
